How to Talk to Your Team About AI Without Killing Their Trust
The question isn't whether AI will change your work. It already has. The real question worth asking is whether you're going to let AI stress you or support you.
The conversation around AI amongst leaders has gone sideways. It's become about fear, displacement, and survival mode.
And when leaders, at any level, are in survival mode, they're not leading. They're managing fear.
That's not where you, or your team, needs to be.
What Your Team Is Feeling Right Now About AI
Many teams right now are at risk of being afraid and stressed.
Because when the organizational narrative around AI centers on efficiency, cost reduction, and doing more with less, what employees hear underneath it is: you are expendable.
When people feel expendable, they don't feel energized. They protect themselves and hope the threat will pass.
This is where your language as a leader matters more than you think.
Try asking your team: What's the most repetitive, draining task on your plate right now? What would you do with that time if AI could handle it?
That question creates something your team desperately needs right now: psychological safety. The encouragement to engage with AI without fear of what it means for their future.
How to Talk to Your Team About AI Without Losing Their Trust
Most leaders default to the language of efficiency and cost — and without realizing it, they send their teams straight into survival mode.
Here's how to shift that:
Instead of: "We're doing more with less." Say: "AI is taking the repetitive work off your plate so you can focus on making a difference through high-level focus, creativity, and strategy."
Instead of: "We're working to find better efficiencies." Say: "We're freeing up your time for the work only you can do."
Instead of: "AI will automate what we do manually." Say: "AI amplifies your expertise. It doesn't replace it."
Instead of: "We're implementing AI to stay competitive." Say: "We're bringing AI in so every person on this team can operate at their highest level."
Your language sets that tone before the technology ever gets a chance to prove itself.
What AI Is Actually Offering You as a Leader
The leaders I work with aren't debating the impact of AI on team culture.
In fact, the Adecco Group's 2024 Global Workforce of the Future survey including 35,000 workers across 27 countries found that AI saves them an average of one hour each day.
What would you do with one reclaimed hour every day? What would your team do?
Because one hour is not a small efficiency gain. That's the margin where strategic success and profit live.
What AI can do, when used with intention, is give some of your capacity back.
Ask yourself first: Are you using AI? Then: Are you using it strategically?
Not only to move faster, but to get the low-value tedious work off your plate so you can show up fully for the work that matters.
For the strategic thinking that changes the trajectory of a company. For the relationships that make leadership matter and team members feel seen, heard, understood, and valued. For high level complex thinking. Or, even for the occasional moment to simply breathe.
This is the coaching lens I bring to AI - to show you how to use it strategically to treat yourself like you are your number one best asset, remove low-value work off your plate, and create more space for innovation, creativity, vision, and strategy.
Where The Horizon Meets You
This is exactly the work I do with leaders - helping you integrate AI leadership strategy in a way that expands your leadership and team rather than adding another tool to manage. Here are a few places to start this week:
Use AI for one task you've been putting off this week. The email, the report, the agenda — hand it to AI and refine what comes back.
Have a conversation with your team. Ask them: What's weighing you down right now? Let's look at where AI could take some of that off your plate.
Audit your AI language. If your last communication about AI was heavy on efficiency and savings and light on capacity and possibility - rewrite it.
